The Issue of Domestic Violence and Abuse - 1204 Words

Around the world at least one woman in every three has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime. Most often the abuser is a member of her own family. (C,J Newton, 2011) Domestic Violence and Abuse can be defined as threatening behavior or controlling behavior and violence of those over the age of 16 whom have been or who are an intimate partner or family member. The abuse can consist of: psychological, emotional, sexual, financial and physical. (GOV.UK, 2013). The main themes of this argument are the political and social attitudes of the subject and how the trends of Domestic Violence and Abuse persuade communities and individuals to feel about the matter; also how different locations and situations have an†¦show more content†¦Domestic Violence and Abuse is not measured accurately due to forever changing definitions, for example before the new definition came into place sixteen year olds and above were not included as a victim of Domestic Abuse making the statistics now a lot less reliable than what they were before the changes in definition. At that age an individual who has been hit off a partner may not see this as a form of domestic abuse. Domestic Violence and Abuse is not statutory making polices responses differ in different counties and countries. Offences would not be recorded as a Domestic Abuse attack but would be recorded as the injuries sustained such as; GBH. Due to this only being a requirement this could mean that statistics would show that different places are at higher risk than others of Domestic Violence and Abuse. Throughout the media; newspaper, radio, social networks and television it always comes down to women being the main victims of Domestic Violence and Abuse and males being portrayed as the offenders in the majority of cases. This could affect them building up the courage to report to the police that they have also been the victim in a violent relationship, men are lead to believe that they need to live a life of masculinity which could stop them from getting out of a dangerous relationship as they could be in fear that they will be looked down on because they are inferior to their partner.
